How to set the language on an app-by-app basis on your Mac

Did you know that since iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 Catalina, it's possible to customise the language for most apps, independently from the operating system language?

This can be useful when, like me, you need to quickly show an app in different languages and you don't want to switch the language of the entire operating system.

On your Mac, open System Preferences then Language & Region

Then click on the Apps tab, then on the "+" button:

Choose the app and the language for that app

Click on "Add"

If the application is currently open and you're in the middle of editing a document, I strongly recommend clicking on "Don't relaunch", otherwise you might lose part of your work.

In that case, the best is to finish working on the document, save it, close the app and manually relaunch the app.

Please note the array of languages supported by an app is dictated by its developer, so you might not necessarily find the one you’re looking for.

And you, how often do you change the language of individual apps on your iPhone or your Mac?
