FAQ: Should I buy the new iPhone 14 and if so, which model do you recommend?

The short answer is: It depends on your budget, the device you currently have and what you do most with your iPhone

On Sep 7, 2022, Apple unveiled four new iPhones, the iPhone 14, the 14 Plus, the 14 Pro and the 14 Pro Max.

The best way to describe iPhone 14 is to think of it as a mashup of:

  • the chassis and processor of the iPhone 13 Pro

  • the camera system of the iPhone 13, with a smaller aperture and brighter flash

  • new features like crash detection, better image processing and improved video stabilisation

The same goes for the iPhone 14 Plus whose chassis comes directly from the 13 Pro Max, but will only become available on Oct 7, 2022.

Unlike the iPhone 14, the 14 Pro range got a new and faster processor improving both performance and power efficiency.

On top of that, its main camera can now capture 4x the number of pixels producing even better images in low light conditions and allowing it to print them in a much larger format.

In other words, if you want the best camera that Apple can offer and you can afford it, then you definitely should consider the iPhone 14 Pro or the 14 Pro Max.

Here's the price list for both models in the 4 possible storage configurations:

If you're satisfied with the pictures that your current iPhone takes, and especially if you already have an iPhone 12 or 13, I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade to any iPhone 14 (normal or Pro).

Besides, Apple ditched the Mini size.

This means that if you currently have an iPhone 6S, 7, 8 or SE, you should consider the iPhone 13 Mini or even the latest iPhone SE.

FYI: Both models are still being sold, with the SE being the last iPhone sporting a Home button with Touch ID but a much smaller battery life than the 13 Mini (between 1 hour and 2 hours less).

On the other hand, if you currently have an iPhone 6S Plus, 7 Plus or 8 Plus, and the 14 Pro Max is beyond your budget, then you can get the iPhone 14 Plus for 300€ less regardless of the capacity.

Here's the price list for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus in the 3 possible storage configurations:

If you have an iPhone X, XR, XS or 11, both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro will give you much better photo and video quality while being more responsive and providing improved battery life.

My advice is to start with determining the storage capacity you need, by visiting Settings > General > iPhone Storage on your current iPhone.

Then, based on your budget and the screen size you'd like to get, it shouldn't be too difficult to choose between the iPhone 14, the 14 Plus, the 14 Pro and the 14 Pro Max.

Having said that, I'd recommend waiting a few weeks before purchasing a new iPhone simply because it will ship preloaded with iOS 16 which is still buggy.

And you, what’s the maximum capacity of the battery of your iPhone and for how long have you been using it?
