My 3 main takeaways from the Apple Keynote on June 5, 2017

Between 5 June and 9 June 2017, Apple is holding its annual worldwide developer conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California.

For one week, more the 5,000 developers from more than 70 countries get to meet and discover new features that Apple has been working on over the past 12 months, both in hardware and software.

In case you don't know, the first day is always kicked off with a presentation called the "Keynote", during which Tim Cook, (the CEO) and his team paint a picture of what is coming up in the world of Apple.

3 ways to sync only some pictures between your Apple devices

By activating iCloud Photo Library, all the albums and folders get synchronised via iCloud.

This is great but it usually requires to buy additional iCloud storage.

So, what if you wanted to sync only some pictures and/or albums?

In that case, I can suggest 3 options, each with their pros and cons.

Is it safe to still use the iPhone 4 in 2017?

Is it safe to still use the iPhone 4 in 2017?

I have fond memories of the iPhone 4.

In fact, it was my first iPhone ever and was a welcome upgrade to my old Nokia E71.

I’m a technologist but not an early adopter, except for one device: the iPad.

And if you’re wondering, yes, my first generation iPad is still working fine.

But let’s get back to the iPhone 4 which was released in 2010 too.

If you’re still using one as your main phone, not only are you missing out on cool features but you’re putting yourself at risk too.

The reason is simple

It depends from your current iCloud configuration and what other devices you have in your possession.

If you have activated iCloud Photo Library, then your photos & videos are automatically copied to iCloud. If you have activated the “Optimize iPhone Storage” option, then you do not have the full resolution version of your photos and videos locally stored on your iPhone anymore.

Since iOS 8, it’s easier to organise photos and videos, thanks to the possibility to create both “Folders” and “Albums” in the Photos app:

Folders:

  • can contain albums and other folders

  • cannot contain pictures or videos
  • are recognisable by their 4 thumbnails (2x2 square)

Albums:

  • can only contain pictures or videos
  • cannot contain folders or other albums
  • only show 1 thumbnail (key photo)

I want to create a new Apple ID, but I do not want to lose the WhatsApp chats and photos stored in the iCloud of the old account. What can I do?

Someone asked the following question anonymously and added this information:

My father and I are sharing the same Apple ID. I have an iPhone 4S, but I just bought an iPhone 6. I want to create a new Apple ID on the iPhone 6, but without losing my Whatsapp chats and photos / videos saved in the iCloud of the old account. What can I do?

What were previously called “Shared Photo Streams” are now referred to as “Shared Albums” which are part of a service called “iCloud Photo Sharing”.

To turn on or off iCloud Photo Sharing on a iPhone or iPad connected to an iCloud account:

  1. Open “Settings”
  2. Tap on “Photos & Camera”
  3. Toggle “iCloud Photo Sharing” on or off

How to solve the iPhone 6 sudden battery drains issue

How to solve the iPhone 6 sudden battery drains issue

Does your iPhone 6 suddenly shut down for no apparent reason?

This issue is coming from a bug that appeared after upgrading to iOS 10.

Both the iPhone 6 and the 6S have been hit but only the latter is subject to the official battery replacement program from Apple.

As a runner, I’ve experienced this problem and the colder outside, the faster the iPhone would shut down unexpectedly, starting at around 50% charge.

Then, to get it back on again, it could take between a few minutes to sometimes 10 minutes (which I suspect is linked to the charge level and the temperature of the battery).

Should I use Family Sharing or share an Apple ID with my wife?

Should I use Family Sharing or share an Apple ID with my wife?

Dan Rothbart asked this question on Quora and added the following information:

Yes, #firstworldproblems, I know. My wife and I are both tech savvy, and take too many iPhone pictures and video of our two children. We each have a MacBook with a full internal hard disk, and external storage. She is the better photo organizer. I use clips to make home movies.

With the recent releases of Family Sharing, Apple Photos, and iCloud Photo Library, I see an opportunity to reduce our storage cost/complexity, and to let us each take advantage of the other's creative & organizational skills.
