FAQ: Should I upgrade my Mac to macOS 12 Monterey?

If your Mac is already running either macOS 10.15 Catalina or macOS 11 Big Sur, the short answer is no, just focus on the security updates of your Mac's current version of macOS.

Here’s why I recommend this:

  1. macOS 12 Monterey is far from being fully baked, meaning that there are still some bugs and not all applications work solidly on it

  2. With macOS 12 Monterey, Apple is continuously introducing new features (like Universal Control) and deprecating others (like a vital extension used by Dropbox) which may destabilise the OS and/or affected applications.

People who use their Macs for their business and/or rely on Dropbox should refrain from upgrading to macOS Monterey before the end of 2022.

Those already on macOS Monterey should definitely install the latest macOS 12 security updates and check for full Dropbox compatibility (see this article)

And in light of the recent DazzleSpy malware discovery, Macs still running macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier should be upgraded to macOS 11 Big Sur sooner rather than later, after having checked that no business-critical 32-bit app is currently installed on the machine.

Indeed, since macOS 10.15 Catalina, only 64-bit apps can run and if you wonder if you still have 32-bit apps on your machine, I recommend installing and running the free app Go64 (from St Clair Software), which will look for those apps.

And you, on which version of macOS is your Mac running?
